The 2001 is wonderfully balanced with tremendous density of ripe fruit, complex, sweet fruit, and soft, round tannins. Reviews for 2001 Vintage From the The Wine Advocate, Issue 145 (Feb 2003): "Points: 91-93. Louis Barruol recognizes the potential greatness of many Chateauneuf du Pape terroirs, and has fashioned a 4,500-bottle Chateauneuf du Pape cuvee from juice he purchased from the two lieux-dits of Valori and La Crau. This wine, which is being aged in one and two year old used barrels, is a blend of 70% old vine Grenache and 30% Mourvedre. The stunning 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape exhibits a gorgeous nose of kirsch liqueur, Provencal herbs, lavender, and licorice. It possesses full body, an unctuous texture, super concentration, and terrific depth. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2016. If you have not yet tried the wines of St.-Cosme, you're missing the boat." © The Wine Advocate From the International Wine Cellar (Jan/Feb 2003): "Points: 91-94. (14.8% alcohol; Barruol's first vintage for this negociant wine; based on 60% mourvedre from Crau; malo and elevage in three-year-old barrels) Full deep ruby. Very ripe but vibrant aromas of blackberry, blueberry, licorice and flowers. Huge and thick, with sappy, slightly roasted flavors of crystallized black fruits, mocha and spices. A Châteauneuf of impressive density and volume, as well as powerful structure; shows almost port-like surmaturite yet maintains shape and lift. Builds inexorably on the back end. This is more massive than the 2001 Gigondas Valbelle but not more complex. May well need a good decade of bottle aging." © International Wine Cellar Reviews for 2003 Vintage From the Wine Advocate, #156 (Dec 2004): "Points: 90-92. His outstanding, deep ruby-hued 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape exhibits elegant sweet cherry and briery notes intermixed with Provencal herbs, ground pepper, and earth in a full-bodied, layered, moderately tannic format. It will benefit from 1-2 years of cellaring, and should keep for 10-12 years." © The Wine Advocate From the International Wine Cellar (Jan/Feb 2006): "Points: 91. Medium ruby. Lush, ripe and rich on the nose, with scents of blackberry, cassis, cherry cola and roasted coffee. Serious, concentrated flavors of dark cherry and smoky blackcurrant are tinged with an intriguing note of garrigue. Vibrant and long on the finish, with fine, dusty tannins." © International Wine Cellar |
