Description
2001 is a superior vintage for Cuvée Emilie, and the wine is particularly dense, rich and mouth-filling with lovely sweet, ripe fruit, fine tannins and layers of toasty oak. This is a vintage which will definitely benefit from significant bottle age and will reward cellaring for 7-10 years.

Reviews for 2000 Vintage
From the The Wine Advocate, Issue 147 (June 2003): "Points: 92. The outstanding 2000 Hermitage Cuvee Emilie (10,000 bottles produced) is one of the vintage's top Hermitages. A blend of fruit grown in the Rocoules (20%) and l'Hermite (80%) vineyards, it is a dense ruby/purple-colored effort displaying notes of licorice, fennel, sweet blackberry fruit, vanilla, and roasted coffee. Supple, fleshy, medium to full-bodied, and low in acidity, it is ideal for drinking over the next 10-15 years. Philippe Desmeures continues to build on his recent successes (the 1999s remain his finest efforts to date). This is a serious estate given Desmeures's unmanipulative winemaking philosophy that puts as much of the essence of his vineyards into the bottle as anyone. In the more challenging 2000 and 2001 vintages, the red wine cuvees have turned out well, although none are up to the level of the 1999s." © The Wine Advocate

From the International Wine Cellar (Jan/Feb 2003): "Points: 91. Very good saturated ruby. Highly aromatic, complex nose melds blackberry, cassis, violet, smoke, cinders and spices. Sweet, supple and very intensely flavored, with nicely delineated black fruit and licorice flavors. In comparison to the 2001, this is a bit less dense in the middle and the tannins not quite as tightly grained, but this stylish Hermitage will offer earlier drinking pleasure. Finishes with building tannins and a late note of dark chocolate. " © International Wine Cellar

Reviews for 2001 Vintage
From the The Wine Advocate, Issue 147 (June 2003): "Points: 90-93. The 2001 Hermitage Cuvee Emilie is similarly-styled, although slightly more delineated, leaner, structured, and ageworthy. Its dense, saturated blue/purple color is accompanied by aromas of melted licorice, blackberry liqueur, asphalt, and roasted espresso. This rich, full-bodied, dense, chewy Hermitage will drink well for 10-15 years, possibly longer. Philippe Desmeures continues to build on his recent successes (the 1999s remain his finest efforts to date). This is a serious estate given Desmeures's unmanipulative winemaking philosophy that puts as much of the essence of his vineyards into the bottle as anyone. From the International Wine Cellar (Jan/Feb 2003): "Points: 91-93. Saturated dark ruby. Knockout nose combines blackcurrant, gunflint, cocoa, brown spices and pepper; showing more grilled torrefaction than outright oakiness. Rich and full, with brooding flavors of raw crushed dark berries and dark chocolate, complicated by sexy spice tones. The mouthcoating tannins hit the palate quite late. Offers outstanding potential and should develop very slowly in bottle." © International Wine Cellar

Reviews for 2004 Vintage
From the International Wine Cellar (Jan/Feb 2006): "Points: 92-94. Medium ruby.  Powerful aromas of raspberry, strawberry liqueur, licorice and violet.  Firm and compact on the palate, showing deep, mineral-laced red berry and cherry flavors and a clinging, sappy texture.  Fruit-packed, minerally and very long on the finish, with a repeating raspberry flavor.  This very sexy wine refuses to let go of the palate.." © International Wine Cellar
