Producer Patrick Lesec Selections (Southern Rhône) Region Southern Rhône, France Encepagement 70% Grenache, vines average age 50 years 30% Mourvedre, vines 15 years old Elevage Not destemmed. Aged for one year in 2-4 year old barrels. Not fined or filtered. Little racking and little sulphur. Description The increased percentage of Mourvedre and the barrel aging make this a super-cuvée of Marquis Châteauneuf du Pape. It is dense, rich, ripe and sweet with layers of supple, ripe tannins and a long, sweet finish. Reviews for 2001 Vintage From the Wine Advocate, #145 (Feb 2003): "Points: 91-93. The Chateauneuf du Pape Marquis is a 16,000 bottle cuvee made from primarily Grenache with a dollop of Mourvedre (7%) and Syrah (3%) included in the blend. The fruit is from two of the appellation's finest sectors. A terrific wine in the making is the 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape Marquis Tonneaux. Aged in one, two, and three-year old barrels, it displays notions of toasty oak in its aromas and flavors. Deep ruby/purple-colored, with sweet black berry and cherry fruit flavors intermixed with melted licorice, roasted herbs, and a meaty character, this dense, chewy, full-throttle Chateauneuf will drink well for 12-15 years." © The Wine Advocate |
