The 2001 is similar in style, but even more concentrated and will improve with some time in bottle. Reviews for 2000 Vintage From the Wine Advocate, #145 (Feb 2003): "Points: 91. The Chateauneuf du Pape Marquis is a 16,000 bottle cuvee made from primarily Grenache with a dollop of Mourvedre (7%) and Syrah (3%) included in the blend. The fruit is from two of the appellation's finest sectors. The 2000 is full-bodied and rich, with loads of black cherry fruit intermixed with plum, fig, tobacco, and lavender characteristics. This unctuous, supple, velvety-textured effort will drink well for 10-12 years." © The Wine Advocate From the International Wine Cellar (Jan/Feb 2003): "Points: 90. Good medium ruby. Vinous, aromatic nose of superripe berries, dark chocolate, roasted herbs and violet. Ripe, supple and stylish, with complex, firm flavors. Has excellent breadth. Finishes with fine tannins and a note of chocolate." © International Wine Cellar Reviews for 2001 Vintage From the Wine Advocate, #145 (Feb 2003): "Points: 91-93. The Chateauneuf du Pape Marquis is a 16,000 bottle cuvee made from primarily Grenache with a dollop of Mourvedre (7%) and Syrah (3%) included in the blend. The fruit is from two of the appellation's finest sectors. Even better than the 2000, the opaque ruby/purple-colored, dense, chewy, heady 2001 possesses high alcohol (15-15.5%) as well as intense kirsch liqueur notes intermixed with dried Provencal herbs, licorice, and spice box. It should drink well for 10-15+ years." © The Wine Advocate Reviews for 2003 Vintage From the Wine Advocate, #156 (Dec 2004): "Points: 90-94. The marvelous 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Marquis is virtually all foudre-aged Grenache from vineyards in the northern sector of the appellation. With 15.6% natural alcohol (not unusual in this vintage for Chateauneuf), this full-bodied, fleshy, hedonistic, glycerin-imbued effort reveals abundant amounts of raspberry and kirsch fruit. It is best drunk during its first 7-8 years of life." © The Wine Advocate |
