St. Joseph is one of the larger appellations in the Northern Rhône that produces
both red and white wines. The quality of the terroir is quite varied and
the best vineyards are on the granitic slopes on the western side of the
valley. The reds are 100% Syrah and tend to be a bit chewy and tannic without
the elegance and finesse of some of their more prestigious neighbors.
Young Jerome Coursodon produces atypically ripe, concentrated, juicy St.
Joseph from vines over 50 years old high on the western slopes. The old vines
yield only 25 hectoliters per hectare and 75-80% of the wine is aged in new
oak barrels on their lees for one year. Little to no sulphur is used, and
the wines are bottled without fining and filtering. The resulting wines are
rich, ripe and sweet with lovely aromas and layers of vanilla oak and fresh
black fruits. |
